Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
