UN Lifts Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.

Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties as the leader of the religious organization the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the Middle East.

Following that encounter, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections during 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.

During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.

  • The high-level talks with the Syrian leader, unthinkable just months ago, elevates national expectations
