It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
