Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
