A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
