A male suspect aged 60 was taken into custody following a shooting that injured at least one person, multiple individuals harmed and several automobiles targeted by gunfire by a shooter within the inner western suburbs of Sydney.
An estimated 100 bullets were fired over a two hour window between 7.45pm and 9.30pm on Sunday night in Croydon Park.
Roads were shut down and the area was placed in lockdown as police launched a major operation following accounts a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon towards drivers, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, travelling along Georges River Road.
The tactical operations squad was called in to arrest a 60-year-old man from a unit above a business adjacent to the bustling roadway.
Superintendent Stephen Parry in an acting capacity stated to journalists on Sunday night it was unclear about the precise count of bullets let off “but there could have been anywhere between 50 and 100 shots that were fired”.
He said numerous vehicles and premises were hit by bullets and incurred damage during the incident, though a more detailed understanding could be obtained during daylight hours.
Parry indicated the location was brought under control “relatively swiftly” and commended the participating police.
“They exhibited extreme levels of bravery by carrying out their duties,” he told reporters in a late-night press conference.
“They faced a barrage of gunfire multiple times and should all be commended due to their conduct.”
He was unable to confirm about law enforcement returning fire throughout the confrontation.
Mal Lanyon, the NSW Police Commissioner stated law enforcement's wearable cameras showed how close officers came to being hit as they took cover throughout the "grave and frightening event".
“One can hear a multitude of firearm discharges, and clear strikes, not too far from the camera,” Lanyon told 2GB radio in Sydney during Monday.
An officer who was fired upon had only been out of the academy for five weeks, Lanyon noted.
A motive for the shooting was yet to be determined though Lanyon stated no association was found with terrorist or gang-related actions.
Paramedics treated sixteen individuals at the location for minor injuries.
Several individuals were transported to the hospital subsequent to emergency medical attention.
A taxi operator who is in his 50s remained in serious yet stable condition having sustained harm to his neck and head area.
It was a matter of luck that further casualties were avoided, Trent King, the acting assistant commissioner stated.
“This is unheard of in Sydney to witness an occurrence of this kind, involving such an extensive volume of gunfire,” he told the ABC radio station on Monday morning.
“It is very fortunate that we didn’t have more damage and clearly further casualties or potentially deaths.”
King said it likely was alarming for the general public as well as for the attending law enforcement.
“To clarify those initial police were fired upon. Law enforcement automobiles incurred harm and we’re very fortunate that all police emerged unharmed.”
The individual in his sixties was under police custody in Bankstown hospital and was slated for questioning and formally charged on Monday.
Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were seized during his arrest, authorities claimed.
An individual who witnessed the shooting reported to the ABC he was passing through and “listened to a series of bangs along the left side of the taxi”.
“And then I looked next to me, and I spotted a few openings on the passenger-side window,” he mentioned.
“I was unaware that the roof had a hole too. And I smelled the gunpowder, however, I presumed because it was [NRL] grand final night, perhaps individuals were lighting firecrackers or the like.”
