Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
